Spring Driving Tips

As the cold winter weather dissipates and we embrace the warmer spring weather, we may tend to put our driving concerns in the back seat. Spring brings its own set of driving challenges that we should be aware of.

When spring arrives, we also see more rain, mist and fog. The warmer weather brings an increased activity on the roadways and residual effects of winter, such as potholes and uneven pavement, also make road conditions rough.

  • Slow down on slick roads and increase your following distance when rain or even mist begins to fall. Even small amounts of water can mix with oil and grease on the road and create slippery conditions.
  • Use your low beam headlights when driving in rain or fog, as high beams reflect the water vapor and can make it harder to see. If rain or fog totally impairs your vision, pull off the road and turn on your hazards until driving conditions are safe.
  • Use your fan and defroster to keep your windshield and windows free of moisture. The air conditioner can also help.
  • Be sure to share the road. Warm weather brings more motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians on the roads.
  • Avoid potholes, if possible, as they can damage your vehicle and throw your car’s front end out of alignment.
  • Avoid driving through large puddles. The water can affect your brakes, cause you to swerve or hydroplane and possibly impair the vision of other motorists on the road.

The below checklist will help you to prepare your vehicle for spring driving conditions.

  • Check your tire treads and replace worn tires. Worn tires provide less traction and greater risk of slides. Make sure tires are inflated properly, according to your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
  • Check windshield wiper quality and replace if needed.
  • Clean your windshield with a strong glass cleaner. Salt and other road residue from the winter months can diminish your wiper’s effectiveness.
  • Check your vehicles headlights, taillights, back-up lights, turn signals and brake lights. These elements are crucial for visibility as well as communicating with other motorists.

Enjoy the spring weather and drive safe!
